Chamber ensembles to perform

Northwestern College’s string and brass chamber ensembles will present a concert on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The ensembles will perform in Christ Chapel, and the public is invited to attend.
The Brass Quintet, directed by Dr. Timothy McGarvey, will perform eight pieces. The ensemble will play Spring from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi and Sarabande by G.F. Handel. They will also play a variety of Christmas carols including I Wonder as I Wander, I Saw Three Ships and The Holly and the Ivy. Leonard Bernstein’s Somewhere from West Side Story and Take the A-Train by Billy Strayhorn will also be featured. Members of the ensemble include Carolyn Dundas and Dan Mangold on trumpet, Rachel Schultz on horn, Josh Van Der Maaten on trombone and Zack Wolf on tuba.
The String Quartet, under the direction of Dr. Kimberly Utke Svanoe, will play three pieces, including Pastorale from Arcangelo Corelli’s Christmas Concerto and Canzona and Allegro from Henry Purcell’s Golden Sonata. The ensemble’s final piece will be Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Start Point, which consists of four sections corresponding with sites on the Orkney Islands. Members of the String Quartet include Carrie Manifold and Anna Christensen, violins; Alexandra Spreigl, viola; and Morgan Weis, cello. Svanoe will join the quartet on harpsichord.
