Jazz Band to present concert on Feb. 19

Northwestern College’s Jazz Band will perform a variety of styles—from swing and cool to salsa and gospel—at its concert in Christ Chapel on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend; no admission will be charged.

The 16-member Jazz Band, directed by Dr. Timothy McGarvey, will perform Israel, one of the pieces made famous by Miles Davis on his landmark recording The Birth of the Cool, and Better Get Hit in Your Soul, a composition by Charles Mingus, the innovative bass player, band leader and social activist.

The band’s repertoire will also include George Gershwin’s Fascinating Rhythm; an arrangement of String of Pearls that was made famous by the Glenn Miller Orchestra; Song for A.E.G. by Tom Garling; and two works by Doug Beach: Vamos a Bailar and Nightwind.

The concert will feature a large number of student soloists.
