String and brass ensembles to perform

Northwestern College’s music department will present a chamber ensembles concert on Friday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The concert will feature the brass and string chamber ensembles. The public is invited to attend.

The Brass Quintet, under the direction of Dr. Timothy McGarvey, will perform six pieces from a variety of musical backgrounds, including a spiritual, 20th century rag and classical.

Goin’ Home, written by Antonin Dvorák and arranged by Jari Villanueva, is an arrangement from the second movement of Dvorák’s New World Symphony. According to McGarvey, words were later added to this melody and the piece transformed into a new life as a spiritual.

The first movement from Quintet No. 2 is written by Russian composer Victor Ewald, who is one of the premier and first writers of original brass quintet music. “His music is considered a staple of the brass quintet repertoire,” says McGarvey.

The Brass Quintet consists of Laura Rensink, Jeremy Hartbecke and Dan Mangold, trumpets; Rachel Schultz, horn; Josh Van Der Maaten, trombone; and Zach Wolf, tuba.

The String Chamber Ensemble, under the direction of Lee Thorson, will perform the four movements of Lynne Latham’s arrangement of George Frederic Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music and Russian composer Alexander Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 in D Major: I Allegro Moderato.

The String Chamber Ensemble consists of Samuel Lim and Aubrey Weger, violins; Alexandra Spreigl, viola; and Eunice Paik, cello.
