NWC to host guest piano recital

Barelos is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano and composition at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She earned degrees in history and music from Bowling Green State University and Luther College.

Barelos’ compositions have been performed in Russia, England, Italy and the United States. Two of Barelos’s pieces, Phobia for solo piano and An Albatross in Waiting for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, were performed recently in Korcula, Croatia, in a program entitled Upbeat. Barelos is also the 2006 winner of the UW-Madison concerto composition competition for her piece 30% From Pumpkins.

Specializing in new music, Barelos works mostly with 20th and 21st century pieces. All works to be played at the recital are from the 21st century.

The recital will consist of six pieces. Eadem Mutato Resurgo, written by Joseph Dangerfield, continues into Tryglyph, forming one piece. Hommage à W.A., written by David Gompper, will be followed by Downward Courses, written by Dr. Luke Dahn, who joined Northwestern’s faculty this fall. Free and Unticketed, composed by Barelos, will also be played, followed by Quiet Music, written by John Allemeier. The final piece for the evening will be Lake Sonata, composed by David Maki.
