On Saturday, Sept. 29, Northwestern College will welcome pianist Eugenio Zapata to campus. He will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. A native of Colombia, South America, Zapata is an assistant professor of music at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D. He began his education at Andes University in Bogota, receiving a bachelor’s degree in music in 1995. After performing and teaching piano for several years, he received a master’s degree in piano performance from Pennsylvania State University in 2000. He earned a Ph.D. in fine arts from Texas Tech University in 2004.
For the past eight years, Zapata has been exploring the interdisciplinary nature of the arts in teaching and performance. These explorations have led to presentations in Pennsylvania, Texas and throughout South Dakota. He will be touring these areas plus the state of Massachusetts again this fall.
Zapata’s recital will begin with Johann Sebastian Bach’s French Suite No. 2 in C minor, BWV 813. Next will be Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s Souvenir de Porto Rico, Op. 31 ‘Marche Des Gibaros.'
Zapata will also perform Consolation No. 3 in D-flat major, written by Franz Liszt, and Frédéric Chopin’s Polonaise in A-flat major, Op. 53.
Following a brief intermission, Zapata will perform Franz Schubert’s Impromptu, Op. 90/D. 899 in C minor. That will be followed by Moritz Moszkowski’s Etincelles: Sparks, Op. 36 No. 6 and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 39 No. 5. Zapata will close the evening with Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth’s Sentimental Heart and Odeon: Tango Brasileiro.
