During his tenure, Murphy has helped raise the college’s academic profile and ensured that students’ education doesn’t stop when they leave class by encouraging integration between academic and co-curricular learning.
He emphasized the need for higher education to lead not just to knowledge, but to wisdom, which includes spiritual as well as intellectual learning.
As a professor in the college’s education department and member of a task force on intercultural competency, Di Murphy helped raise Northwestern’s awareness and understanding of global issues and diversity.
“The best leaders are the ones who lead from who they are,” says Drew Vogel, chair of Northwestern’s Board of Trustees. “Bruce and Di are known for their deep connections on campus and in the community. Their heart for students and the whole-life development of young people is obvious.”
