NWC receives $14,400 Humanities Iowa grant

Northwestern College has received a $14,400 grant from Humanities Iowa for “Minding Place,” a weeklong symposium that will take place next April, during the college’s 125th anniversary year.

The grant, which is matched by funds from the college, will support speakers and events during the symposium April 4–12.

Kathleen Norris, the award-winning author of Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, will be the featured speaker on Wednesday, April 9, during Northwestern’s first annual Day of Common Learning for students, college employees and the wider community.

Oral historian Charles Morrissey is also on the symposium program. Additional speakers will include authors whose writing is firmly rooted in a particular place.

“The symposium is intended to engage the surrounding northwest Iowa community in reflecting on place and how the geography, culture and spirituality of our place shapes our literature, history, religion and science,” says Dr. Douglas Anderson, history professor at Northwestern and project director for “Minding Place.”

Grant monies will also enable faculty and administrators to explore the creation of a Northwestern College Center for Regional Studies.

To be included on a mailing list to receive further information about “Minding Place,” call event planner Jill Haarsma, 712-707-7100, or e-mail mindingplace@nwciowa.edu.
