MTC Scholarships awarded to six freshmen

Six freshmen at Dordt and Northwestern colleges have been awarded $1,500 renewable scholarships from the MTC Foundation Inc. of Sioux Center. They are the 15th class of students to receive the MTC Foundation Scholarships.

MTC Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed by Mutual Telephone Company in 1990, donates annually to both colleges to fund the endowed scholarships for students from the Sioux Center exchange area (722). Three freshmen at each school have been awarded renewable scholarships every year since 1992-93. There now are 12 MTC Foundation Scholarship recipients at both Dordt and Northwestern.

The new Dordt recipients are Unity Christian High School graduates Hillary Marra, a general studies major who is the daughter of Kevin and Ada Marra, Sioux Center; Danielle Roos, an English major who is the daughter of Derrick and Arnola Roos, Sioux Center; and Allison Wesselius, a health sciences major who is the daughter of John and Janna Wesselius, Sioux Center.

The new Northwestern recipients include Unity Christian High School graduate Kristin Draayer, the daughter of David and Brenda Draayer, Sioux Center; Lisa Nyhof, a Sioux Center Community High School graduate and the daughter of Lyle and Alice Nyhof, Sioux Center; and Unity Christian High School graduate Renee Nyhof, a communication studies major and the daughter of Darrel and Mary Nyhof, Sioux Center.

The sophomore class of MTC Foundation Scholarship recipients at Dordt includes Ben Dirksen, a health, physical education and recreation major who is the son of Joe and Mary Dirksen, Sioux Center; Joy Horstman, a general studies major who is the daughter of Allen and Colleen Horstman, Sioux Center; and Melissa Hulstein, a physical education and recreation major who is the daughter of Kevin and Deb Hulstein, Maurice.

Northwestern’s sophomore scholarship winners include Bethany Landegent, daughter of Dale and Ruth Landegent, Sioux Center; Martha Perez, a Spanish major who is the daughter of Andres and Martha Perez, Sioux Center; and Jean (Yusten) Punt, a theatre major who is the daughter of Vincent and Carol Yusten, Sioux Center.

The junior class of MTC Foundation Scholarship recipients at Dordt includes Eric Vande Griend, a physical education and recreation major who is the son of Mark and Kimberly Vande Griend, Sioux Center; Scott Van Voorst, a youth ministries major who is the son of Gerald and Marcia Van Voorst, Sioux Center; and Matthew Zwart, a biology major who is the son of Merlin and Bev Zwart, Sioux Center.

Junior scholarship winners at Northwestern include Jillian Peters, a business major and daughter of Robin Klemme, Sioux Center; Robin Van Veldhuizen, a Spanish major and daughter of Larry and Pamela Van Veldhuizen, Sioux Center; and Brett Vander Berg, a religion major and son of Jane Anema and Douglas Vander Berg, Sioux Center.

Dordt seniors receiving MTC Foundation Scholarships include Stephanie Davelaar, daughter of Ireton’s Brian and Sheila Davelaar, a business administration major; Paul Krygsman, son of Sioux Center’s Hubert and Nancy Krygsman, a history major; and Jayme Van Beek, a biology major who is the son of James and Donna Van Beek, Ireton.

The senior class of MTC Foundation Scholarship recipients at Northwestern includes Nicole Kraayenbrink, an elementary education major who is the daughter of Dale and Brenda Kraayenbrink, Sioux Center; Mark Larson, a mathematics and theatre major and the son of Bradley and Marsha Larson, Sioux Center; and Titus Landegent, a music major and the son of Dale and Ruth Landegent, Sioux Center.

The students qualified for the scholarship by residing in the Sioux Center exchange area, applying for admission to Dordt or Northwestern by Feb. 1, and having a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 or a minimum ACT score of 21. Leadership, character and Christian commitment of the candidates are other factors considered during the scholarship selection process. The scholarships are renewable for a maximum of four years provided recipients maintain a 3.0 GPA and are otherwise in good standing at the school.
