Moliere, the theatre world's preeminent writer of comedy, takes delight in satirizing the medical profession, education, and male/female relationships in this popular 17th century farce. When Sganarelle, a simple woodcutter, is beaten into believing he is a doctor, he adopts his new-found profession with zeal and comic inventiveness. He introduces a new way of practicing medicine, works miraculous cures and impresses his patients--until, that is, his con is discovered.
