The Christmas Vespers concert will center on the theme of “Majesty to Manger: God of the universe becomes helpless babe,” inviting listeners to reflect on the mystery of the Creator entering the world as a vulnerable child. Scripture readings led by Dr. John Vonder Bruegge, dean of arts and humanities, will guide audiences through the nativity story, highlighting shepherds, angels and the manger.

Performing ensembles include the A cappella Choir directed by Dr. Thomas Holm; the Women’s Choir directed by Cindy Moeller; the Brass Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra directed by Dr. Angela (Holt) Carlson; and organist Dr. Jeremy Owens. The audience will also be invited to join in singing several traditional carols.

Among the ensembles’ selections are Morten Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium,” a meditation on the wonder of Christ’s birth; Craig Courtney’s “Mary, Did You Know?” featuring vocal solos that explore Mary’s quiet contemplation; and Eric Whitacre’s “Lux Aurumque,” a depiction of warm light shining on the manger as angels sing. The concert will open with an organ prelude and brass fanfare before moving into choral works, readings and audience carols.
