Northwestern's writing + digital media major will help you grow in your abilities as a content creator and consumer, equipping you to communicate well and connect meaningfully with others. You’ll develop your professional, academic, and creative writing skills by studying a variety of writing genres, preparing you for career paths in social media, editing, publishing and more.

At Northwestern, we view the digital world as a unique opportunity for discipleship and spreading God's message of hope to the world. Your professors will be storytellers and communications pros, artists and graphic designers, photographers and video producers. They'll teach you creative and critical thinking, allowing you to turn your ideas into digital media that speaks to others. We also offer related minors in art, computer science, journalism, multimedia and public relations.

With hundreds of new ways to view, stream and share content every day, it's no wonder that the content marketing industry was valued at an estimated $600 billion by the end of 2024. The working world needs people who understand how to tell digital stories that resonate with people. In fact, from 40% to 50% of all graphic design, video animation and copywriting jobs are outsourced to agencies. With a writing + digital media degree in hand, you'll be ready to meet those job opportunities head-on.

Visit the Student Success Center for free writing help from an experienced student tutor. Strong student writers are recommended by their professors to work at the center or to serve as writing fellows for the First-Year Seminar course, so you could be paid for having a way with words!

Each spring, students from nearly every department on campus participate in Northwestern’s Celebration of Research, a showcase of student research and creative projects. This opportunity will allow you to share your writing and digital media work with others in Northwestern’s campus community—great practice for grad school!

Northwestern students regularly attend this writing festival at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Past speakers have included celebrated authors, poets and theologians like Maya Angelou, Sarah Bessey, Frederick Buechner and Shane Claiborne.

Jourrney across the pond for a semester at the University of Oxford, the oldest unviersity in the English-speaking world. As a visiting student, you'll have access to more than 100 libraries and 11 million books! A 3- to 4-week summer study abroad experience in England is also offered, during which students attend plays on London's West End, tour museums, worship at St. Paul's Cathedral and explore a castle ruin.
