Creative by design
Rhea came to Northwestern planning to study marketing, but she soon discovered a new major that better fit her creative interests. Now a writing + digital media and theatre double major, she’s exploring storytelling in many forms through journalism, content creation, theatre, choir and campus work-study positions. As she writes for the Beacon, assists with theatre social media, and takes advantage of mission and study abroad opportunities, Rhea is gaining experience that will prepare her for a variety of creative career paths.A new direction
I originally came to Northwestern as a marketing major because I was interested in promotion. But after taking some business classes, I realized they weren’t quite what I was looking for. When I learned Northwestern was starting a writing + digital media major and saw that it included content creation, journalism, social media and even a Disney course, I got really excited. It was the exact type of marketing I wanted to do, and just a week later, I made the switch. I’ve been very happy ever since.
Creative possibilities
The writing + digital media major gives students another way to use their creative spirit. Digital media is growing so much in today’s world, and Northwestern’s program gives us the chance to take classes in different kinds of writing, content creation, animation, graphics, promotion and more. I appreciate that we get to learn a little bit of everything, from feature writing and media writing to broadcasting, public relations, brand security and creating a children’s book.
Passionate mentors
The faculty at NWC are like no other. They truly care about your success and want to see you grow personally. The writing + digital media professors have so much personality and are passionate about what they teach and sharing their lives with us. Dr. Kali Jo Wacker especially stands out to me because of the way she interacts with students. Whether I’m stopping by her office to say hello or ask a random question, she’s always willing to listen, encourage and invest in her students.
Making it happen
I would encourage prospective students to choose Northwestern because it will make an impact in your life. College will be what you make of it, and Northwestern is a place where you can make things happen no matter what direction you are heading. If you want to grow in your faith, travel, build relationships or prepare for a successful career, Northwestern has people and opportunities that will help you do that.
