Heart for adoption

Born in Ethiopia, Mari was adopted and brought to the U.S. as a baby. Because of the important role social workers play in the adoption process, she realized that she could bring valuable insight in helping other families grow through adoption. She is also open to the possibility of going to graduate school to train in marital counseling. A Bridge Scholar and teaching assistant, Mari is a cheerleader for the Raiders and also serves as an ambassador for the admissions office.

Vibrant + intentional
I knew Northwestern was the college for me as soon as I stepped foot on campus. The community is vibrant, Christian education is intentional, and the accredited social work program has intelligent professors who enjoy their chosen field. Professors invest in each student, and it’s evident through meetings, figuring out course schedules, or simple catch-up conversations here and there.

Valuable connections
Another strength of the program is the connections you’re able to foster with other social workers. I have been blessed to learn about several different paths within the social work field by listening to speakers who come to campus and share their experiences. Students can take in information about the profession while making connections with the speakers, which could lead to mentorships and potential internship opportunities.

Building on a faith foundation
Through classes like Christian Story, I was provided with resources to expand my knowledge of concepts introduced earlier in life. Classes in my major have helped me apply biblical knowledge to my future profession. Outside of the classroom, opportunities such as discipleship groups, Praise + Worship, and late-night conversations with friends have each stewarded the love, community and goodness of Christ.

Champions of character
One of my favorite Northwestern memories thus far was going on a trip to North Carolina with the cheerleading and football teams for the NAIA national championship. Even though we were off campus, the values Northwestern stands for remained evident among the students on the trip—both on the road and in the stadium.
