Maren stepped onto Northwestern’s stage to try her hand at acting while also experimenting behind the scenes, where she discovered her love for technical theatre. The balance and breadth of her undergraduate training became evident as she went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree in lighting design and technology from West Virginia University—and eventually land a role as a lighting designer at Disneyland. Nudged by Northwestern’s professors to experiment and discover her true calling, Maren places her faith center stage each day, glorifying God through her artistic gifts.Why did you choose to attend NWC?
I wanted a college that was smaller for a more individualized experience and support. I met Professor Drew Schmidt on my tour, and when he spoke about art in relation to Kingdom work, I knew this was the program for me.
What led you to decide to pursue a career in theatre?
I have been doing theatre since I was seven and grew up watching my family do theatre in some capacity. I feel like it was what I was always best at. During my time at NWC, I discovered how I can use my art to glorify God and feel like this is a gift he has given me.
How did you grow at Northwestern?
I became more confident in myself and my identity in Christ. My worth only comes from him, which has been freeing in my career and life.
What are the strengths of NWC’s theatre department?
I grew at NWC as an artist by learning to take risks and not be afraid if something doesn’t work. I think this is very important for artists of all crafts to learn. Without the support of the faculty, I would not have grown in my confidence as a designer.
How did NWC prepare you for graduate studies and what you’re doing now?
The rigorous academics and high standards we were held to prepared me for graduate school and now the industry. NWC taught me that everywhere is a mission field, and my art can be used to glorify God and bring people to him.
