Jonathon Muyskens
Assistant County Attorney, Marion County Attorney’s Office, Knoxville, Iowa

Community first

Jonathon never expected to attend college so close to Sheldon, Iowa, where he was raised, but Northwestern felt like home. And home is precisely the reason he wanted to study criminal justice: to protect people like those in his Midwestern community. Jonathon went on to earn his law degree from Drake University and land a position as assistant county attorney in Marion County, Iowa, prosecuting cases and advising local officials. NWC professors shaped his ability to articulate ideas and identify the heart of an issue, Jonathon says. Today, he uses these skills to empower victims, reform defendants and create transformative change.

What are some of the responsibilities of an assistant county attorney?
I prosecute criminal cases on behalf of the state of Iowa in Marion County. I also advise county officials on civil matters that involve Marion County, and work with law enforcement to ensure that their tactics, arrests and other activities comply with the Iowa Code.

What are the most satisfying aspects of your career?
I am most satisfied by the ability to see real change in the community because of my prosecutorial efforts. This can be through getting drugs off the street, seeing victims empowered, putting defendants in a position to make changes in their lives, and so many other ways.

What led you to decide to study criminal justice?
I chose to study criminal justice because of my love for the community I grew up in. I knew early on that I wanted to be involved in work that makes people feel safe and at home in the community where they live.

How did NWC prepare you for what you’re doing now?
Northwestern, and specifically the criminal justice program, taught me to create solutions that not only address the problem at hand but also its root causes. The program does an excellent job of getting students to be proficient at articulating their thoughts in ways that are presentable and in a medium that can be easily applied to their area of work.

What did you appreciate most about Northwestern’s faculty?
I most appreciate how approachable, personable and caring the faculty at Northwestern are. Every time I am back on campus, I try to seek out Dr. Hausmann and Dr. Monsma. They have heartfelt care for each student that passes through that program, which greatly elevates those students in their work and eventual careers.

What did you come to value about your NWC experience?
I valued the camaraderie that was present in dorm halls, sports and other groups. I also valued the numerous opportunities to be involved.
