Balance sheet

Isabel appreciates Northwestern’s balance of academics, activities and spiritual life. Through them, she’s challenged to grow in different ways and to develop a variety of skills. A member of the women’s soccer team and the pep band, she tutors fellow students in math and serves as a writing fellow. After she graduates, she plans to become an actuary for a property/casualty insurance company.

Perfect combination
I chose Northwestern College because of the Christian community, small class sizes and campus, as well as the opportunities for involvement. I wanted to have an education where faith would be integrated into all of my classes. I also appreciate the smaller campus because I can have more personal connections with professors and classmates. At Northwestern I am also able to be involved with many different activities and interests outside of classes.

Knowledge put to work
I decided on a major in actuarial science because I wanted to study mathematics, and I’m interested in the finance and economic applications of math. I enjoy taking classes in a few different subjects and putting them all together to solve real-world problems. Northwestern has a strong actuarial science program that prepares students well for passing the professional exams.

Reflecting God
Being an actuarial science major has strengthened my faith because I’m learning how to better understand the world God created. That helps me to know God’s attributes better too. I think God is represented in the patterns of the world that we see through mathematics. Everything was designed in such a specific and special way, and we can understand and learn from it.

Added bonus
At Northwestern, I’ve developed a stronger faith and learned more about the Bible, God and the Christian faith. I have also gained a strong education and more knowledge and passion for my area of study. And I’ve created deep connections with other people in my classes and activities. One of the most exciting parts of college is the new friendships you make!

Studying abroad
My best memories at Northwestern so far come from my honors study abroad experience in Greece. After a semester of studying ancient Greece, the class spent three weeks visiting archeological sites all over that country. I made many memories and connections with the other people on the trip. I also loved learning about the history and culture of Greece. It helped me understand a little more about the context of the New Testament, and I learned about the roots of mathematics and the development of the world.
