Although she arrived at Northwestern with an undecided major, Clara quickly discovered that graphic design was where her passions and talents intersected. Now a graphic design and writing + digital media double major, she’s explored her creativity through projects ranging from children’s books and logo design to journalism and research presentations. Through hands-on learning, faculty mentorship and opportunities to pursue her own creative interests, she’s developing the skills and confidence to pursue a future in graphic design. Finding my direction
I’ve loved creating art for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t realize it could become a career until one of my high school art teachers mentioned graphic design. As soon as I took my first college art class, I was hooked. I realized this was something I was truly passionate about. What excites me most is the variety of things I can do with a graphic design degree—from book cover design and page layout to illustration, poster design and even animation.
Learning by doing
One of the strengths of NWC’s graphic design program is how hands-on it is. In class, I can try concepts as they’re being taught, which helps me ask better questions and remember what I’m learning. My favorite part is that many projects allow for a lot of creative freedom. Instead of just completing an assignment, you’re able to work on something you care about and let your own style and creativity shine.
Creativity with purpose
One of the biggest ways Northwestern has impacted my faith has come through project reflections. They’ve challenged me to think more deeply about the role art and creativity play in God’s kingdom. I believe creative people reflect God’s nature as Creator. Artwork has the power to draw attention to ideas and inspire people to think deeply. As a Christian creator, I want my work to point people toward what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable while also being honest about the realities of our world.
Professors who encourage
The art professors at Northwestern are kind, knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions or provide feedback. They take the time to know students by name and also connect us with opportunities they think fit our interests. Many of my involvements on campus started because a professor encouraged me to get involved. They are also incredibly supportive of personal creative projects.
