Directing dreams

Having performed with no fewer than seven musical ensembles while at Northwestern—including the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra—Austin enjoyed an undergraduate experience perfectly tailored to his dream job. The music and secondary education major is now a middle school band director, guiding students from their first day with an instrument all the way to competitions, honor bands and performances. Austin’s diligent development of his gifts and the investment of professors led him to a career doing what he’s always loved: sharing music with others.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your career as a band director?
The most satisfying aspect of my career is seeing students grow not only into independent musicians but dependable, hardworking citizens. There is nothing better than seeing students strive for excellence on their own.

How did NWC prepare you for what you’re doing now?
NWC prepared me through its music courses and ensembles that strive for excellence. It also helped me develop leadership and time management skills for the classroom. I was equipped to face uncomfortable challenges, be a leader and serve Christ using my gifts. Now, I get to teach others how to share their gifts with others.

In what ways did you grow in your faith at Northwestern?
I discovered through my peers and Northwestern’s faculty what it means to live a Christ-like life and to use your gifts to honor and serve God. As someone who only knew Christ on a surface level before Northwestern College, I feel I am now equipped with the knowledge and ability to discover more on my own and share it with others.

What did you appreciate most about Northwestern’s faculty?
The music faculty are phenomenal. They invest in your education, push you to develop your musicianship, and help you discover your potential. I most appreciated their hospitality and warm nature; everyone cares about your success.
