Dr. Carlson directs Northwestern’s Symphonic Band, Jazz Band and wind ensembles, while also teaching instrumental music education.
Integrating faith
In 2019, Dr. Carlson received Northwestern’s Faculty Excellence in Faith and Learning Award, which recognized her ability to infuse her faith into her job as a professor and director. She incorporates biblical stories and themes into concerts and emphasizes that rehearsals and performances are opportunities to worship God through excellence in music.
Relationship builder
Dr. Carlson is known for her friendships with students. Whether she’s talking to students as they’re congregated in the music building or during meals, she enjoys intentional conversations about faith and current events.
Tour leader
Every year, she leads Northwestern’s Symphonic Band in domestic or international trips. In 2019, the ensemble toured in Spain and helped expand ministry opportunities for a local church.
