Northwestern presents Music Department Showcase on Oct. 2

Northwestern College will present the Music Department Showcase Concert on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

The concert will consist of music from Northwestern’s Symphonic Band, A cappella Choir, Orchestra, Women’s Choir and Heritage Singers. The ensembles will be performing a variety of pieces, including Eric Whitacre’s “Hurt” performed by the A cappella Choir, Henry Purcell’s “Chacony in G minor” performed by the Orchestra and Philip Lawson’s “William Tell Overture” performed by the Heritage Singers.

Three student soloists will be featured during the concert: senior Lauren Johnson, winner of the McGilvra Keyboard Scholarship; junior Ashley Van Ravenswaay, winner of the Ritsema Family Instrumental Scholarship; and sophomore Katie Struck, winner of the Cyndy Rowenhorst Vocal Scholarship.

In order to protect both the musicians and those attending, audience members will be required to wear a face mask, and family groups and individuals will be seated in designated spots in order to physically distance in the chapel. An overflow area will be set up to watch the concert’s livestream, which can be accessed at vimeo.com/nwciowa.

“After being separated from in-person music making since last March, we are thrilled to be rehearsing again and are excited to perform for friends, family and community members,” says Dr. Thomas Holm, music department chair. “Our fall department showcase concert has traditionally been one of our most popular concerts of the year, and this year should be no exception.”
