Northwestern College Symphonic Band to perform concert

The Northwestern College Symphonic Band will present a concert on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

The band, under the direction of Dr. Tim McGarvey, professor of music at Northwestern, will perform a variety of pieces, including “American Salute” by Morton Gould. The song is based on Patrick Gilmore’s “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again.” The ensemble will also perform “Rag” from “Suite of Old American Dances” by Robert Russell Bennett.

Scott McAllister’s “Love Songs” will also be performed during the concert. The piece is inspired by three different types of love: agape, or parental love; philia, or brotherly love; and eros, physical love.

The ensemble will also perform David Gillingham’s “No Shadow of Turning,” which is based on the hymn tune “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” The band will be joined by the college’s bell choir during the performance.

Both movements of Carter Pann’s “Richard and Renée” will be performed during the concert: “I. Renée’s Reply” and “II. Floyd’s Fantastic Five-Alarm Foxy Frolic.” Andrew Currier, pianist and a junior music major, is featured on this piece.

The concert will conclude with “Suite From the ‘Star Wars’ Epic,” composed by John Williams and arranged by Robert W. Smith. The six movements of the suite contain music from all six “Star Wars” movies.

“I love the variety in this exciting program,” says McGarvey. “There are many different representations of beauty, power, meaning and fun for every listener.”
