Northwestern students volunteer with political campaigns

Four Northwestern students are working on political campaigns this fall as part of their enrollment in a political science course at the college.

Amanda Allen, a junior political science major from Sweet Home, Oregon, and Sarah Breen, a sophomore political science major from Orange City, have been working on the Nussle/Vander Plaats campaign for governor, as well as other Republican campaigns.

Brett Brown, a senior minoring in political science from Ankeny, Iowa, is helping Barbara Blanchard's effort to win a State Senate seat in District 1 in Sioux City, Iowa, where she's up against two-term incumbent Steve Warnstadt.

Billi Ellingson, a senior math major from Pella, Iowa, who plans to go to law school, has signed up with Chet Culver's campaign for governor. She is working with the Democratic campaign office in Sioux City.

Taught by Dr. Jeff VanDerWerff, "Electoral Politics Field Experience" includes discussion of the students' experiences as campaign volunteers. Class members are also reading and discussing such books as "The Vanishing Voter: Public Involvement in an Age of Uncertainty," by Thomas Patterson, and "In the Name of Jesus: Reflections on Christian Leadership," by Henri Nouwen.
