Tony Hoops leads an athletic department with a history of strong competition in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and nationally in the NAIA while representing Northwestern’s mission as a Christian academic community.
Prior to joining Northwestern, Hoops served six years as vice president for athletics at his alma mater, Bethel College (Kan.). During that time, he led Bethel’s athletics program from a struggling department to one that regularly wins conference championships and competes at the national level. He increased private fundraising departmental gifts by 650%, helped raise more than $6 million for facility updates, generated more than $400,000 annually for the athletic department, and increased booster club membership by 500%. In 2020–21 he was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Athletic Director of the Year.
Hoops also served as Bethel’s head men's basketball coach from 2014 to 2018 and spent eight years as a teacher and coach at two Kansas middle and high schools. He has a master’s degree in school leadership from Baker University and a bachelor’s degree in health management and physical education from Bethel.
