Vocare initiative funding opportunities
A $2 million grant from the Lilly Endowment in 2002 enabled Northwestern to launch Vocare: Find Your Place, initiatives that help students explore and discover their callings. Many of the initiatives are now funded by Northwestern College. A Lilly Endowment sustainability grant of $500,000 funds the initiatives below.
For students, faculty and staff
Students, faculty and staff are invited to submit proposals requesting funds for projects that support the initiatives listed below. Please refer to the two-digit initiative number in your proposal.
- Goal 1: Ministry discernment and pastoral leadership vocational exploration
- Seminary or graduate school visits Maximum: $300/student
Students may request funds to travel to seminaries or graduate schools they are considering attending; seminary visits will be given priority, including an annual, Northwestern-sponsored, visit to Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. (1.1)

- First- and fourth-year programs
Faculty or staff may request funds for programs that incorporate vocational exploration, spirituality or Christian disciplines/practices into first- and fourth-year courses or experiences. (1.2)
- Goal 2: Deepening faculty and staff learning about vocation
- Vocation-infused courses
Stipends are available for faculty who want to create or revise courses so they have a vocational exploration component. (2.1)
- Faculty fellowships
Faculty can apply for one of three annual summer fellowships that support personal exploration of vocation within a particular discipline. Recipients are expected to present their research and findings publicly the following year. (2.2)
- Visiting artists
Campus community members may request funds to invite writers, musicians, and visual and theatre artists to visit Northwestern and lead students in an exploration of vocation in the arts. (2.3)
- Vocation-infused student advising
Faculty and staff advisers who want to explore better methods of advising students—especially undecided students—in ways that help students discover vocation can request funds for research, training and sharing their discoveries with others. (2.4)
- Curricular and co-curricular mini grants
Funds are available for faculty and staff to research and propose innovative projects that will infuse vocation into the life and culture of Northwestern. (2.5)
- Goal 3: Student leadership development and vocational exploration
- Student conferences
Students may request funds to attend conferences with vocational exploration themes like leadership, Christian practices, and worship and the arts. (3.1)
- Alumni mentoring
Faculty, staff or students may request funds to facilitate connections with alumni who can help students explore vocation through mentorship and internships. (3.2)
- Goal 4: Conversation and community
- Vocational leaves for staff
Staff members, who are not eligible for sabbatical leaves, may apply for funds for short-term leaves that enable them to explore vocation beyond their roles at Northwestern. (4.1)
- Goal 6: Christian practices
- Faculty/staff retreats
Vocare funds faculty/staff retreats for college employees to reflect on calling and Christian practices. (6.2)
