Christian theatre ministries
Theatre majors who know they want to work in Christian theatre or do theatre in the church can add a career concentration in Christian theatre ministries to their major. Increasingly, as the church has become comfortable with a wide range of music in worship, a place for the visual arts is opening as well.
Northwestern theatre faculty and students are leading the exploration of drama in worship through the development of enacted prayer and restoring ancient Israelite dramas to the stage. In 2004, theatre professor Jeff Barker collaborated with a Broadway composer to write And God Said, a musical that dramatized 10 Old Testament stories. Christian theatre ministries students and other theatre students collaborated on that project, as well as on other original worship dramas Barker has written about drug addiction, AIDS and September 11. Those worship dramas have been performed in churches across the U.S. and at the Christians in Theatre Arts (CITA) national conference by NWC’s touring theatre company.
In addition to opportunities on campus, a Christian theatre internship, either in a church or in one of many professional Christian theatre companies throughout the U.S., is an important component of the career concentration in Christian theatre ministries.
