Bringing your computer to campus
About 70 percent of our students bring their own computer to campus, and the percentage grows every year. Most students bring a laptop, as they are becoming more affordable and provide mobility that a desktop cannot. A laptop will also give you the option of taking it to class or home during weekends or breaks. Also, as Northwestern continues to expand its wireless network, a laptop is becoming useful in more and more places on campus.
Any computer purchased in the last five years should work on Northwestern’s network. Obviously, the newer the computer, the more capable it will be and more likely to integrate well with the network.
We recommend your computer has at least Windows XP installed on it, or if it’s a Macintosh, that it has at least OS X. It should also have an Ethernet connection. If it’s a laptop, a wireless connection would be useful as well. Check out our FAQ page to find a more detailed list of our recommendations.
For software, Northwestern requires you to have an anti-virus program as well as the latest patches installed on your computer, and to have both updated regularly.
