Spanish House
(Doorenbos Cottage)

Ann DuMez, resident director
Piet Koene, foreign languages, faculty adviser

Cottage manager
   Sarah Hansen, Clear Lake, IA

Northwestern College has had a Spanish House since 2002-03; five to 10 students live in the house each year. Adviser of the Spanish House is foreign languages professor Piet Koene and his bilingual family. The Koenes eat and socialize with residents of Spanish House regularly.

Residents of Spanish House commit to speaking only Spanish when they are at home. In addition Spanish House residents commit to interacting with and serving the local Hispanic community. They tutor Hispanic children and teach English as a second language. They may also attend a Spanish-speaking church, Amistad Cristiana, in nearby Sioux Center, Iowa, and help host Spanish chapel services on campus.

Spanish House is a family-style living experience with residents sharing a home on campus that has several bedrooms and a common kitchen, living room and bathrooms. Beds, dressers and desks are provided, and laundry facilities are in the cottage. Spanish House is only for female students at this time.
