Students say …
Music is a big part of your life. God has gifted you with musical talents, you enjoy pursuing musical excellence, and you believe music can help transform the world.

By studying music and expanding your skills at Northwestern, you’ll benefit from interaction with students and faculty who support and celebrate your gifts, encourage you to develop them in new and exciting directions, and inspire you to approach your music as a form of worship and service.

The people in Northwestern’s internationally recognized music department will be your sounding board for questions like “How does God intend us to use music? What is quality in music? What does it mean to be an excellent musician who is also a Christian?” We approach musical studies holistically from a Christian perspective, exploring both historic and modern traditions, and perform a variety of Western and non-Western musical styles.

At Northwestern, you will learn from—and develop friendships with—faculty who are active composers, conductors, clinicians and performers. Because of their leadership, Northwestern’s music program has been identified as a “quality program at a quality college” by Rugg’s Recommendations on the Colleges. In addition, graduating senior music majors consistently score in the top 20 percent on ETS major field exams in music theory and history.

Northwestern’s music graduates are teaching and conducting music at all levels, and many have furthered their education at top graduate schools. They also are performing and writing their own vocal and instrumental music, serving as music ministers, providing music therapy and working in music businesses.
