One-year ESL
certificate program

Northwestern’s one-year ESL certificate program is for non-native speakers who want to achieve the English skills necessary for success as degree-seeking students at Northwestern or other U.S. universities. Entrance into the program requires a minimum TOEFL score of 63 (350 for the non-computer TOEFL test). Students who complete the certificate program and achieve a TOEFL score of 213 (550) or better will be eligible for enrollment as degree-seeking students at Northwestern or other U.S. institutions. If accepted at Northwestern, courses taken as part of the certificate program will then be credited toward graduation requirements.

The ESL certificate program is for:
  • High school graduates who need an improved TOEFL score to enroll in undergraduate programs in U.S. colleges and universities.
  • Business persons who want to improve their English for better employment.
  • Professionals who need better English skills before acceptance into English-speaking graduate programs.
