Foreign language study and service abroad
Question: What’s the only major that requires a passport?
Answer: Spanish. (Think of it as a major with a built-in “travel” minor.)
It’s true. As a Spanish major, you’ll spend at least one semester studying abroad. There are several options for completing this requirement. The most popular is the Latin American Studies Program, sponsored by the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). If you choose this option, you’ll live with a Costa Rican family, take classes at the Spanish Language Institute in San Jose, and attend seminars that explore the many challenges facing Latin America. The program includes a service component, a three-week tour of neighboring Central American countries, and a choice of four concentrations, including one in international business.
Or maybe you’d prefer studying in Mexico or Spain. Through cooperative arrangements with other colleges, you can improve your Spanish language skills, tour the country, and deepen your understanding of its culture, history and role in the world today. Northwestern also provides the opportunity to study in France for a semester.
If studying abroad for a full semester isn't a possibility, you can improve proficiency in a foreign language through the college's summer study abroad program. Recent four-week courses have taken place in Ecuador, France, Germany and Mexico.
Want to do some good while improving your Spanish? Every spring break, Northwestern sends students to various locations through the U.S. and world, including Latin America. Recent mission trips have included Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua. Our Summer of Service program provides similar experiences for longer periods of time. And the growing Hispanic population in communities around NWC gives you the opportunity to tutor, befriend and worship with Spanish-speaking people.
