Understanding and appreciating other cultures is increasingly important in this age of global communication and business. What better way to do that than by speaking another language?

Northwestern’s modern foreign language department can equip you with the skills you need for a diverse world, whether you want to

  • Major in a foreign language (Spanish),
  • Simply learn another language (French, German and Spanish),
  • Teach English as a second language (TESL), or
  • Improve your English skills as an international student (ESL).
At Northwestern, we’ll help you do more than speak another language. You’ll learn not only vocabulary, but how people of other cultures think and communicate by gesture and expression. You’ll gain a new understanding and appreciation for other cultures—and new eyes for viewing and evaluating your own language and way of life. And as a Spanish major, you'll also study in a program that is included in Rugg's Recommendations on the Colleges, a national guidebook that recommends specific college departments to prospective students.

A foreign language major is excellent preparation for teaching, graduate study, employment in another country, or a career as a translator or interpreter. Being bilingual will also enhance your job prospects in almost any field, whether business, social work, medicine, the travel industry, law or missions work. If you’re interested in teaching, a TESL endorsement will make you more effective in America’s increasingly diverse schools, while the TESL minor will benefit you if you’re interested in missions or teaching English overseas.

Regardless of your career, you’ll be better equipped to overcome barriers and better able to share your faith with all you meet.
