Financial aid checklist
- FAFSA
- Submit FAFSA for financial aid eligibility starting January 1. (www.fafsa.ed.gov.)
- Apply for U.S. Department of Education PIN online at www.pin.ed.gov.
- Northwestern’s school code is 001883.
- Iowa students must file by June 30 to be considered for the Iowa Tuition Grant.
- Student Aid Report (SAR)
- Review to determine the accuracy of the information and submit any changes through the FAFSA website.
- Verification
- The financial aid office will notify you through e-mail or mail (if you didn’t include an e-mail address on your FAFSA) if you were selected for verification.
- If selected, you will need to complete the requested verification worksheet available at www.nwciowa.edu/financialaid/forms/default.aspx and send copies of tax returns and W-2s for you and your parents to our office.
- Award Notification
- Students will receive notice when their award is ready to view, accept or decline online via their Northwestern SWISS account.
- Check your “documents needed” list in the financial aid section of your SWISS account to view missing documents.
- Stafford Loan
- To complete your Master Promissory Note (MPN) online, go to elmselect.com. If online is not an option for you, please request a paper version from our office.
- First-time borrowers are required to complete entrance counseling at mappingyourfuture.org before any loans will be disbursed.
- Institutional Loan
- You will receive a paper application for awarded institutional loans. Please return these forms so we can apply the loan to your bill.
- Perkins Loan
- You will receive an e-mail notifying you to complete the MPN online for this awarded loan. If online is not an option for you, please request a paper version from our office.
- Additional Loans
- Alternative loans for students or parents are available up to full cost.
- For a parent loan, go to the "PLUS Loan" tab at elmselect.com.
- For a student loan, go to the "Private Loan" tab at elmselect.com.
- Outside Scholarships
- Please notify our office of any outside private scholarships you have received by submitting the name and amount on your SWISS account. Go to the “Outside Scholarship” tab in the financial aid folder.
- I-9s and W-4s
- The federal government requires all students to complete these forms in order to work on campus. This includes tutors, work-study, activities coordinators, and all other paid positions. Northwestern collects this information for all first-time students in case they ever work on campus. Please see our student employment Web page for instructions.
