Athletes at all levels know that competition can include injuries. An athletic trainer often is the first person on the scene when an athlete or physically active person is injured. Quick assessment of the injury leads to prompt care by either the athletic trainer or a physician, hopefully enabling a fast return to activity.
Northwestern's athletic training education program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). It is also included in Rugg's Recommendations on the Colleges, a national guidebook that recommends specific college departments. Students prepare for their careers with courses in human anatomy and physiology, emergency care, injury/illness prevention, nutrition, psychology and administration. In addition, students gain hands-on experience in the program, working in a variety of clinical, practice and game settings.
Northwestern graduates who have taken the Board of Certification examination for athletic trainers have proven the excellence of NWC’s program. Alumni are currently working as athletic trainers at both the high school and college levels. Others are pursuing graduate degrees in athletic training or related fields.
