Northwestern College’s
fine art collection

The holdings in Northwestern College’s fine art collection are primarily etchings, engravings, lithographs and woodcuts—with a few paintings and sculptures. Donors to the collection have included faculty, alumni and other friends of Northwestern College. Thirty-four Japanese woodcuts were donated in 1972 by Mrs. H.V.E. Stegeman, who collected these works with her husband while they were serving as missionaries in Japan from 1917 to 1941. Contact Professor Rein Vanderhill, collection manager, for more information. During the Meiji Era, one of the ways Japan was able to raise money for the war effort was by exporting silk. The words at the top in rough translation read:
“The Kangyo Company, Gumma Prefecture.
Silk produced by our company should be the best. From the same number of moths we should try to produce more silk than other companies. We should experiment to develop a way to obtain more silk. We sell more silk to foreign countries. If its quality is poor, it brings shame on our country. To produce high quality silk aids both our country and the foreign countries with whom we trade. This is our desire.”
