Instructions for international applicants
Applicants are considered on the basis of probable success at Northwestern College as indicated primarily by grades, class rank and test scores. Once all forms have been submitted, you can expect to hear back from Northwestern regarding the status of your application within two weeks.
Steps in applying for admission:
- Complete the International Student Application for Admission. There is no fee if you apply online. If you submit the paper form, the application fee is $25. For a paper version of the application, you may either download and print the form or ask that an application packet be sent to you by e-mailing admissions@nwciowa.edu or calling 1-800-747-4757. Once completed, the application should be mailed to:

- Complete and submit the Declaration of Finances Form. [download Declaration of Finances Form] The U.S. government requires all international students to demonstrate they have adequate funds to pay for their education. We cannot issue an I-20 unless there are adequate funds. Please be honest and as accurate as possible when completing this form. The form must be signed by your parents or whoever is guaranteeing payment, and it must be certified by a public official such as a lawyer, notary or bank official.
- Submit an official copy of your high school and/or college transcripts in English to Northwestern College. These documents must include a signature and the official seal of the school sending them.
- For those international students whose native language is not English, you must provide us with your TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score. We will also accept your Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores or an official letter of English proficiency from a school administrator.
We recommend you take this test eight to 12 months before you enroll. You can list Northwestern’s institutional code (6490) on the test to have your scores sent to us, or you can send a copy of your TOEFL scores with your application. Plan on two months from the date of the test for us to receive the scores and another one to two months for all of your I-20 and visa paperwork to be completed.
- Provide us with your American College Test (ACT) or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) test scores. If you’ve already taken the test, your score will be printed on your high school transcript.
Important financial aid information for international applicants
In addition to providing a deposit of $5,000 (U.S.), you will need to document you have the ability to pay for your college education before you come to Northwestern—either through family resources or through a sponsor willing to support you while you are here.
While some financial aid exists for international students, the amount of money is limited and is awarded based on individual situations. Both merit and need are considered when making awards.
