Off-campus programs
Sometimes expanding your worldview doesn’t require a trip overseas. While Northwestern offers both semester-long and summer study abroad programs, we also have a number of off-campus programs in other parts of the U.S. We understand cross-cultural learning can occur in the environment of a major metropolitan area as well—or that you may have specific interests or career goals. Whatever the case, Northwestern offers several semester-long off-campus programs that may be just what you’re looking for:
The American Studies Program will give you an insider’s view of Washington, D.C. This interdisciplinary, issues-oriented program connects biblical faith with public life and vocation through seminars, an internship and community living.
The Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies is an academic program for college students that focuses on Christian environmental stewardship. At Au Sable, you’ll take courses in environmental studies, field biology and ecology in northern Michigan’s Great Lakes forest, the Pacific Northwest’s Puget Sound, the Everglades, East Africa or South India.
The Chicago Semester will help you develop Christian social values, understand the city and its culture, and strengthen your career goals. The one-semester program consists of an internship four days a week and seminars on Friday.
The Contemporary Music Center on Martha’s Vineyard lets you test the waters of a career in popular music. Get hands-on experience writing songs, performing and recording—or learn about artist management, contracts and marketing. Aspiring musicians and music executives alike will develop a Christ-centered vision for music content, production and delivery.
The Creation Care Study Program, with campuses in Belize, Central America, and the South Pacific (Samoa and New Zealand), seeks to help students connect their Christian faith with complex, urgent global issues. Students in the four-month program take courses in theology, biology and sustainable development while exploring tropical rainforests, mountain streams and coral reefs. They also live in Christian communities at Nabitunich (Belize) or Kodesh (South Pacific) and have the opportunity for village home-stays with Belizean and Samoan families.
The Los Angeles Film Studies Center integrates a Christian worldview with an introductory exploration of the work and workings of mainstream Hollywood entertainment. You’ll network with professionals in the film industry during your internship while taking classes that provide both theory and practice.
The Washington Journalism Center is a semester on Capitol Hill that cultivates professional news skills and encourages students to think through the implications of being a Christian working in the news media. Students intern at a top news publication while taking classes on the history and future of the media.
