Honors research

In addition to taking honors seminars, program members are expected to complete honors research. Honors research projects examine a topic within the student’s major and are pursued under the direction of a faculty member. The final product of the research project will be discipline-specific. Although most often a research paper, the final project might also be a fine arts performance, a literary composition or a lab report.

All departmental honors research courses fulfill the honors research requirement for graduation from the Honors Program. Departmental honors research courses are listed as 499 in the course catalog (for example, ENG 499). To apply for honors research, students must have junior or senior standing and a GPA in their major of 3.25. Applications for honors research should follow the guidelines in the course catalog and be submitted to the associate dean for academic affairs three weeks prior to the start of the semester when the course is to be taken. Students whose majors require a senior project can apply for the project to receive credit as both a senior project and an honors research project.

In addition to applying for honors research with the associate dean, Honors Program members must file the declaration of honors research form with the co-directors of the Honors Program. One of the directors must also sit on the student’s faculty panel.
